Visiting Volunteers

Have an extra hour twice a month? Make a new friend and a world of difference in the life of a Chicago senior! In our Visiting Volunteer Program, you’ll be matched with an elder based on shared hobbies and interests. Matches are flexible according to your schedule. Plan your visits just as you would with any friend. And while a year commitment is required, we see matches that continue on for many years. To get started, become an LBFE volunteer by attending  a virtual orientation.

In-home Visits

We celebrate with our elders everywhere, including where they live. Volunteers bring friendship, conversation, and laughter to our elders at home and in nursing homes, assisted living centers, or the hospital.

Volunteer Program Assistants & Visiting Interns

Volunteer Program Assistants visit and plan outings for 25 elders in a region of the city over the course of a year. While building relationships with our elders, you’ll also form deep connections with those around you, explore your interests and reflect on what’s next. You’ll make a meaningful impact in the city of Chicago, and meet new friends of all ages. We have flexible schedules for retirees, too.

Visiting interns spend 5 to 10 hours a week visiting elders at home for conversation or a cup of coffee. Meaningful friendships are established and grown over the course of a four- to 12-month internship. Both of these opportunities provide deeper understanding and valuable experience in the field of aging.

Holiday Gift Deliveries

Every December, with the help and generosity of our donors and volunteers, each Little Brothers’ elder receives a specially chosen gift. They’re powerful reminders to our elders that they’re loved and not forgotten. Also, it’s often the only gift an elder can expect to receive at this time of year. Volunteers help deliver these presents and cheer during an in-home visit.
