Q: How long is the commitment as an LBFE volunteer?
A: We hope to build a long-term relationship with our volunteers, but we only require 5 hours a year to be considered an active volunteer. You can give this time all at once or during a few different events or activities — we’re very flexible.
Q: How old do you have to be to volunteer?
A: All ages are welcome, but you have to be 18 to volunteer independently. Children regularly volunteer alongside parents or with school groups, and there are many opportunities for older adults, too.
Q: What does it take to become a volunteer?
A: You’ll need to attend an orientation and successfully complete a background screening to get started.
Q: Can I volunteer near my own neighborhood?
A: Yes! LBFE serves 1,000 elders across Chicago, DuPage and Kane Counties, and NW Indiana.
Q: Where is LBFE located? Where should I park?
A: Our address is 355 N Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL, 60607.
There is a small parking lot in front of the building and additional parking in the alley on the south side of the building. Please refrain from parking in the lot next to the train tracks on the north side of the building. Once you arrive, use the call box next to the main entrance and reception will buzz you in. From there, please check in at the front desk.
If you’re taking the CTA, the #9 Ashland bus runs right past LBFE, and we’re .2 miles from the Ashland & Lake Green Line station.
Q: Do I need a car to volunteer with LBFE?
A: No. While there are volunteer opportunities for drivers, there are many ways to volunteer that don’t require a car. If you want to accompany an older adult to an LBFE event, you are welcome to share a taxi or rideshare.
